About This Wine
The
full story.Paul Hoogwerf and Doug Mylrea founded Maanschijn — Dutch for 'moonlight' — in Walker Bay, South Africa, named after the Maanskynkop peak that towers above their tiny converted-stable winery on a saltwater lagoon between Hermanus and Stanford. The Luma is made from Sauvignon Blanc grown on Maanschijn's own estate Stonefields vineyard — a single hectare planted just outside the cellar door on sandstone and quartz soils scattered with Table Mountain boulders that have rolled down from Maanskynkop. Organically farmed, hand-harvested, and vinified with native yeasts and minimal intervention. The cool maritime climate of Walker Bay, influenced by the southern Atlantic, gives this Sauvignon Blanc a singular stony, saline precision that sets it apart from other New World expressions of the variety.
