About This Wine

The

full story.

Barbacàn is a small estate farming just six heroic hectares of old-vine terraced vineyards in Valtellina, Lombardy — one of Italy's most extreme and labor-intensive wine regions, where all work is done by hand on near-vertical Alpine slopes. Leonardo da Vinci described Valtellina's wines as 'heady & strong,' yet Barbacàn pursues the opposite: elegant, minimalist expressions of the valley's ancient field blends. The Rosso is made from 90% Chiavennasca (the local name for Nebbiolo) with up to 10% of rare indigenous co-varieties: Rossola, Pignola, Brugnola, and Negrera — long forgotten outside the region. Traditional vinification with approximately 20 days of maceration, aged in stainless steel and older barriques for 8 months. Spontaneous fermentation, no additions, no fining, no filtration. A genuine wine of this remarkable Alpine place.
