About This Wine
The
full story. The Layon region, a small tributary of the Loire, was and remains traditionally known for its surprisingly sweet wines from noble rot. If the wines of the neighboring bank (off the opposite bank) of the Loire, Savennières, tended to be almost always dry, here they were almost inevitably sweet, due to the additional humidity of the Layon which favored the growth of botrytis. Combined with the shallow and shale soils that the Chenin loves, the result is amazing. Vanessa only produces the Coteaux du Layon 1er Cru Chaume sucré in the years conducive to the development of botrytis and it is a seminar on balance. Concentrated without being heavy, with an "electric" acidity that crosses the sweetness, aromas of apricot, honey and candied pineapple on a finish of magical persistence.
